Safeway Contribution Supports Wellness Place
Wellness Place has received a generous donation from the Safeway Corporation every year for the last 5 years. The funds are part of those collected at the check stands during the month of October. October is National Breast Cancer Month. Across the country employees of Safeway ask customers paying for groceries to donate for breast cancer research and support. Safeway state and regional administrators are allowed to choose which charitable organizations receive the funds. Traditionally the money has gone to large national level groups, such as the American Cancer Society.
In North Central Washington for the past 5 years the Safeway Corporation has chosen Wellness Place to receive some of the funds collected in their Wenatchee, East Wenatchee, Leavenworth, Chelan and Omak stores. Since choosing Wellness Place, five years ago, the amount collected during each campaign has steadily risen. It seems that the customers appreciate knowing the funds will go directly into a program that helps neighbors and friends. This year was no exception!
Every one of the Safeway stores listed above worked hard to collect another record breaking amount. The stores in our area did not stop at simply asking for donations. Creative fundraisers unique to each store were held. Employees put in extra time organizing garage sales, fishing derbies, music performances, barbeques, pumpkin carving and much more. In October of 2007, the total collected by the five stores was approximately $60,000. $20,000 has been dedicated towards the purchase of a mobile mammography van which will be headquartered in Spokane. It will take a few years to collect all that is needed to purchase the van and begin operation. Eventually the van will travel to our region. The traveling van will remove barriers that presently keep some women from having yearly exams. Mammograms remain the best method of breast cancer detection. All women over age 40 are advised to have a mammogram. The remaining $40,000 collected was given to Wellness Place in the form of a check on December 27, 2007.
Support Cancer Fundraising Events
Sometimes we learn about events sponsored by other organizations. While we do not sponsor these events, we support their involvement in the community of organizations that work to improve the lives of cancer patients and the science that seeks cures. We list upcoming events when we learn of them.
